The Moe AAA Apex and Lions Park is a large park adjacent to the Moe Racecourse. The park has become a destination park for families to bring their children to experience a diversity of both structured and unstructured play activities. The design brief was to create a sensory and nature-based playspace to the east end of the existing structured play and theme apparatus. Latrobe City Council engaged our practice to prepare the concept design to contract documentation drawings and specification of the nature-based playspace.
Our design team met with Council’s Project Manager on site, to review the opportunities and constraints. We prepared pencil schematic sketch layouts, then developed the design from concept to detailed design and documentation. Key elements in the design were providing positive drainage, control of vehicle access, the removal of four large Monterey Cypress trees with the retention of their trunks to become wood carvings, the retention of existing shelters and reuse of existing picnic tables in order to reduce costs.
Key playspace elements included a wigwam comprised of Monterey Cypress branches and logs, sand play area incorporating salvaged Monterey Cypress logs, a basket swing set, dry creek bed, carved timber animals and a rope play area. An accessible concrete perimeter path enclosed the play area with links to the toilet block.
